Pulmonary Function Sutdies in Normal Koreans

Abstract
By means of a respirometer, the resting minute ventilation, oxygen. consumption, ventilation equivalent and rate of oxygen removal were measured on 100 healthy men and 43 women,
The determination mean values were as follows:
Minute ventilation - 4.78 L. /M2 in males ; 4.43 L. /M2 in females
Oxygen consumption - 149 cc/rnin/AI2 in males ; 139 cc/min/M2 in females Ventilation equivalent - 2. 69 L. in males ; 2.67 L. in females
Rate of oxygen removal - 39.0 cc in males and 39.4 cc in females.
When repeating the determinations on the very same persons, a marked fluctuation was noted in the ventilation equivalent and the rate of oxygen removal, thus suggesting that these were largely influenced by a psychic factor.
Using the Darling¢¥ s open circuit method and a respirometer, the lung volume and its subdivisions were also determined on 22 healthy males and 12 females.
Absolute values of lung volume and its subdivisions manifested marked individual variations; however, the mean values of each subdivision were higher in males than in females as was expected.
Relative values of lung volume and its subdivisions also showed marked variations in individuals. The mean values, however, of expiratory reserve volume and vital capacity were higher in males than in females while that of residual volume was higher in females than in males
The observed relative values of residual volume (emphysema index) approximated the predicted normal values in males whereas, in females, the values were higher than the predicted normal.
